Royal Bridal Icons

30 Apr

Nothing is more exiting as the moment when the dress everybody has been talking about for months, finally reveals.

When I was a little girl, one of my best friends was an old lady that lived next to my grandmother. I used to visit her and she would give me peanuts and cookies. I really loved to spend time at her house and one of the reasons was because she had a Princess Diana bridal porcelain doll. She was quite big and was wearing an exact copy of Princess Diana’s wedding dress. I sat in front of the doll and admired her for hours. That was when my fascination for royal wedding dresses began.

I was not born when Princess Diana walked down the aisle in 1981 but I was watching every minute of the Norwegian royal weddings in 2001 and 2002, and off course for the Swedish one last year. The most exciting part is when we get to see the dresses. Yesterday was no exception.

I guessed that Catherine Middleton was going to wear something classic, clean and simple, either strapless or halterneck. I was very surprised by the lace arms, but I think that she could not have chosen a more perfect dress. The beautiful dress had many similarities to the one Grace Kelly wore in 1957, which is my favorite royal wedding dress of all times. It is no doubt that Catherine Middleton is the new bridal fashion icon.

Who does not remember the legendary scene from Sex and the City when Samantha Jones uses Lucy Luiu to get her hands on a red Birkin bag? Or when Rory in the Gilmore Girls gets a pink Birkin bag from her boyfriend, but does not know what it is? The Birkin bag has become a symbol of fortune and success. It is handmade and the material you can choose from is crocodile skin, calf leather, ostrich and lizard. It costs about $9,000 to $150,000, depends on the material and size. The bag is made by Hermès and is named after the French actress and singer Jane Birkin. There are long waiting lists for the bag and it is said that Victoria Beckham owns one in every color and size. To own a Birkin bag is really a dream. And for the prize of overwhelming $9,000 , it is a dream that today is far, far away. But who knows? Maybe one day I can write about the day when i got my Birkin? I sure hope so.

Twiggy

16 Mar

From school girl to the worlds first supermodel.

“Life is about making choices: you can either spend three quid on a glossy magazine or you can spend it clearing three square metres of minefield and help give people their lives back. As simple as that”.
– Twiggy.

Leslie Hornby (Twiggy) was born in North London on September 19th, 1949. She was discovered in 1966 and became, almost over night, the worlds first supermodel. The Daily Express named her “The face of 66”. She brought something new to the world of fashion, with her deer-like eyes, her adrogynous figure and her short hair. The people, designers and photographers loved her but after only four years in the modelling business,  she decided to quit and only accept special offers. She was the most photographed face of the world and has been on the covers of Vogue, Seventeen and Newsweek, to mention some. She is also a successful actress, singer, designer and TV presenter.

Twiggy was the forerunner for the Boho-chic style. A style that is influenced by the bohemian and hippie culture. Today stars like Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and the Olsen Twins has embraced the style, that is perfect for festival summers. The typical Twiggy style consists of mini skirts, short dresses with floral patterns, bows or ribbons, over-sized sun glasses and hippie elements.

“I loved it, it was like a dream come true, a fairy story. It was certainly better than going to school, which was the only other thing I`d ever done.”
– Twiggy.

” I`m not as skinny as I used to be, thank God. I`d look very strange if I was. I`m slim. I eat healthily because that`s the way I prefer to eat and I`m sure it helps keep the weight off”.
– Twiggy.
